Clothes that kill

The WA Web Awards black tie dinner is coming up on 18th of August, and once again I have to find a dress. A task which is complicated by the fact that I don’t wear high heels. Ever.

My reasons are simple – they hurt. I don’t know what it is about my feet but it’s hard enough to find any comfortable shoes, let alone ones that require me to teeter precariously on spindly sticks. Almost always coupled with ridiculous strappy bits and cramped pointy toe space.

As well as foot pain, high heels are known to cause back pain and even deaths each year due to “falling down the stairs”-style accidents. I read that’s the case in Japan, where platform heights get ridiculous.

Essentially, I’m against clothes that kill.

The list of fashion items that have caused deaths also includes neck ties and drawstrings. The danger of neck ties should be obvious – but drawstrings have also caused nasty accidents, so many that there’s been campaigns to ban them from children’s clothing.

Oh, and how could I forget the peril of baggy pants? The remake of The Hills Have Eyes has an amusing scene near the end where the young hero is nearly caught by the hideous mutant because he trips over his baggy emo pants. I had a hard time not laughing out loud in the cinema.

Same as I have a hard time not laughing when I sit somewhere in the city and watch all the female office workers teeter past in their stilettos, stumbling on every crack in the pavement. Or worse still try to run for the bus. Is fashion that important?

  1. He he he……I love your rant Kay, but……..being able to run in high heels is one of my most hard earned life skills!

  2. Ooh, I wear workboots almost always but sometimes I like the challenge of high heels. I’m sure more drawstring wearers should have their attention drawn to the dangers though, especially those who blog. 🙂

  3. What do you think of vintage clothes? I have some stuff up at my website http://www.belly-clothing.com that could be considered slightly emo. I’m trying to get some feed back on some of them.

    Thanks!

  4. DidnÂ’t know the forum rules allowed such billraint posts.
