the goatlady in a dress

•January 14, 2007 • Leave a Comment

My brother Les is back from his honeymoon cruise (I know this because he now has an RSS feed). While they were away Cat and Les posted a few happy snaps, updates etc and by the looks and sounds of it they had a good time.I would certainly love to go back to Singapore some time soon (and hey, who knows, there’s a new budget Singapore airline starting up soon).

What may be of interest to the more cynical readers of this blog is that he has also posted a couple of photos from the wedding. Including two of the entire bridal party, including the goatlady herself wearing a dress. And not just any dress (and certainly not a dress I would pick myself) but a bridesmaid’s dress.

So there you go. Laugh it up, go on.

Like a really, really big cubby house

•January 14, 2007 • 2 Comments

I am totally fascinated with Sealand. Dave found more info about the place here: The History of Sealand.

I think the attraction for me is that it’s basically a really, really big treehouse.ย  I can imagine the excitement that Roy Bates would have felt when he first took over in 1967… “Now I’M the king of the castle, mu-ha-ha-ha”.

I also find it kind of amusing that it’s Michael Bates, the son, who keeps getting into trouble. According to the article when he was 16 he fired a warning shot at a Trinity House vessel (I had to look that up on Wikipedia, apparently Trinity House is a guild that looks after lighthouses, buoys etc around the Britsh Isles). I can only imagine the disdain for authority that you must have when you’re 16 and your dad has just taken over an offshore miliary fort and declared himself an independent state. And then a few years later poor Michael gets kidnapped. At least he’s led an interesting life.

It’s also fascinating that there was another similar fort that the Navy knocked down to stop something similar happening there.

So come on peeps, who’s in? Only 100 million pounds. A once in a lifetime opportunity! We can take turns running up the pirate flag and singing “I’m the king of the castle”.

nighttime walks

dark

As I just explained to Al, I don’t think there’s anything odd about going out for walks at 11pm or even later. For a start it’s nice and cool. There’s no people around to possibly annoy you, and next to no traffic. It’s quiet, and if there was anything good on telly, it’s long over.

He’s probably right though, I should probably not refer to it as “prowling” ๐Ÿ™‚

Here’s Photo Project Day 14: Somewhere in Madeley, a little before the witching hour. I took my camera out in the hopes of seeing something interesting or spooky but it’s a quiet suburb, there’s not much happening. I tried to take a photo of some water patterns left by someone’s sprinkler but I think they saw me out the front window cos the sprinklers went off pretty quick, they probably thought I was documenting watering-day abuse or something. Not that I have any idea what days are watering days, not having a garden requiring watering myself. Nor do I care.

our humble abode

entrance

Technically, it’s just slipped past midnight, but this is actually Photo Project Day 13 (Saturday). We just got back from our nightly prowl around the suburbs. This is the front of the house. It looks stark and lonely at the moment.

But my plant is still alive.

Who wants to buy me a country?

SealandSealand is for sale. Let’s see, if we all chip in 10 mil or so, we can all move out there! The only problem I see is that the North Sea is freezing and I’m not a fan of the cold.

Still, it’s a fascinating concept.

My vintage Wired magazines finally arrive

more vintage wireds

This is the whole of volume 2 (1994).

I bought them from a Canadian guy on eBay. Postage was about four times the cost of the 12 issues, and they took about five months to arrive. But they made it in the end and I’m happy… I think I’m only missing a handful of issues out of the entire set now. That’s 14 years worth!

So, that’s my obsessive compulsion – can anyone beat that for weirdness?

Suicidal Tendencies announced for Soundwave Festival

•January 11, 2007 • 3 Comments

Suicidal Tendencies and Deftones membersI’ve been really looking forward to the Soundwave Festival, coming to Perth in March. I’m a big fan of the Deftones (although not of their latest album), and also Hatebreed who we’ve now seen twice. Plus I’ve heard good things about Juliette Lewis’ band, Juliette and the Licks, and the organisers are going to great lengths to explain on their web site that it’s a festival done right, with lots of toilets, full sets by all bands, reasonably priced food and drink, etc. What’s not to like?

Just to make it even better, Al was excited to inform me yesterday that skate-punk legends Suicidal Tendencies had been added to the lineup. Now, when I say excited… he’s not normally an excitable kind of guy. Or big on going to gigs. So it’s a big deal.

I did see ST in Perth about six million years ago (actually a little googling – in which I find some posts by this guy called heist who reminds me very much of someone – tells me it was 1994) and they were great. Although I do remember at the time it was a “last time ever farewell tour” and from what I gather Cyco Miko just refuses to quit.

One slight downer is that I just looked up Simone’s initial announcement on Enjoy Perth and seen that I’ve just missed out on early bird tickets which were substantially cheaper. Bugger!

And… there’s still a third announcement. Woo-hoo!

Just look at what I have to put up with

Staring contest

Quite often, actually using my desk can be quite a challenge. Because it’s quite small and I have so much crap lying around and no where to store it, I usually only have a small space for things like notepads, pens and post-its. But then sometimes it gets pointed out to me by those who must be obeyed that it’s not actually my desk at all.

This morning, for example, Honey parked herself there and proceeded to try and stare out Danzig. I don’t think she realises that he’s plastic, and subsequently can’t blink. She had a good go at it however.

So, there we have it: Photo Project Day 11. Are you impressed that I made it through 10 whole days without reducing myself to cat-blogging? I am. According to The Tunafish With No Blog’s initial projection, I will lose enthusiasm in said Photo Project sometime in the next 3 days or so.

It’s Port80 time again

•January 10, 2007 • 1 Comment

What better way to spend a Wednesday – down the pub with your geeky mates. Of course, there being a cyclone around and all, the weather was cold, windy and rainy. Which makes sitting outside more unpleasant than it should be. However, next month Port80 should be at the Velvet Lounge up the road – a very nice indoor venue. Here endeth Photo Project Day 10.

Does it get any better than this?
