Ronnie James Dio and the nature of internet hoaxes

•May 16, 2010 • 2 Comments

UPDATE: Several hours after the first announcement was proven to be false, Wendy Dio confirmed that Ronnie James Dio had indeed passed away. A very sad day for metal. The sentiments in this post are still relevant, however.

In what was a pretty unhappy hour or so, half the internet thought that Ronnie James Dio was dead.

Thankfully it looks like it’s not true and the man with the horns carries on – although for how long is not certain. According to this article, his wife Wendy told Blabbermouth that he’s not doing well. I sincerely hope that he can make a recovery because the world is not ready to move on without him just yet!

What’s interesting is that we were all so ready to believe the rumours. I think that’s because:

  • he IS battling a serious form of cancer, and from all accounts is very unwell
  • rumours no one wanted to believe about Peter Steele’s death just a few weeks ago turned out to be sadly true, and
  • while you don’t always believe what you hear when it’s a big Hollywood star or a mainstream musician, Ronnie James Dio is so universally beloved by the metal community that we didn’t believe that anyone could possibly be so callous as to start a rumour about his death.

As it turns out, the metal community contains people who are complete cunts too. I guess given the level of intelligence of most Blabbermouth commenters, for example, this shouldn’t be a surprise, but somehow it still is.

So there you have it. A big lesson for all of us – check your facts carefully first. And remember that arseholes are everywhere.

In the meantime, let’s celebrate Dio and hope that he can pull through. Here’s two of my favourite Dio songs (and no, neither of them are Holy Diver):

Update: Pretty much at the same time as I posted this, the lovely Biodagar from Metal As Fuck posted a similar although possibly more impassioned rant on her own blog: To all the internet pranksters – fuck off and die. Check it out. She’s really angry!

Danzig touring again!

*sigh*

A few years ago, Glenn Danzig said in an interview that he was too old to be touring – that he was ok with flying in for one off shows, but spending weeks in the back of a bus was no longer attractive. I can’t for the life of me find a reference online, but I swear I read it. Subsequently I moved heaven and earth to get to Sydney to see the Evil Elvis live in 2006, in what I assumed would be my one and only chance.

A few years on, it seems memories of the horror of the touring lifestyle has faded cos he’s back on the road – with performances at the Sweden Rock Festival and Finland’s Sauna Open Air, then nine dates in the US, all in June, to support upcoming album Deth Red Sabaoth.

According to Blabbermouth’s “exclusive” report, the band plans to tour “extensively” in support of the new album.

Do I like the sound of “extensively”? Hells yes.  Please, please, please include Australia!

Napalm Death in Australia in 2010

Napalm Death!

Got word last week that Napalm Death, a band I really love, is touring Australia again.

They were last in Australia in September 2007 (see my review for FasterLouder), but I last saw them at Wacken 2009 (not a full review, but they got a mention in day 4 of my diary).

One of the nutters over at Demon Pigeon reviewed a recent Napalm show, which is interesting to me because I imagine they’ll be playing a similar set. It’s nice (although not surprising) to hear they put as much effort into a show in a shithole as they do in a stadium or festival – especially because they’ll be playing the good ole Amplifier Bar in Perth!

Frontman Barney Greenaway is outspoken on a variety of topics, but also comes across as a really nice bloke. Here’s a recent interview from Mexico that’s kind of interesting. I couldn’t help laughing because there appears to be people jogging laps in the background. Every time they cut back to Barney, the runners are at a different point. It’s funny, trust me.

Australian dates for Napalm Death – supported by none other than Dying Fetus, who impressed greatly on last year’s Australian Summer Slaughter tour – can be found on the brand-spanking new Soundworks Touring web site:

September 1st – Amplifier Bar, Perth
September 2nd – Fowler’s Live, Adelaide
September 3rd  – The Hifi, Brisbane
September 4th – The Factory, Sydney
September 5th – The Hifi, Melbourne

If your going to the Perth show, you can get tickets through Metal As Fuck and help out our favourite zine of obliteration. And I’ll see you there!

A little more action please

Dolph!

I love action movies from the ‘80s and ‘90s, and my favourite action hero is definitely Dolph Lundgren. Not only is he hot, a weightlifter and a 3rd dan in karate, he’s got a master’s degree in chemical engineering and speaks five languages so is obviously no slouch in the brains department.

Some of my favourite Dolph movies:

As Ivan Drago in Rocky IV:

[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/v/ygQvB6OjHOU]

In The Punisher, playing the title role:

[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/v/YOGJh-4nHyo]

What’s more, sci-fi writer William Gibson claims that Lundgren can do comedy. In this blog post from 2003 (you need to scroll to around two thirds down the page), he talks about Johnny Mnemonic, a film based (loosely!) on one of his short stories:

Ever notice how little sense Dolph Lundgren’s Street Preacher character makes? Just this big lunatic who periodically rages onstage and tosses people around?

I’ll tell you something you may not believe: Dolph Lungren can actually do *comedy*. I mean, like, who knew? But he can, and did, with great gusto. The nature of his character was anchored in a scene in his church (he’s the local Panawave-equivalent) in which he preaches, buck nekkid and skin-studded with creepy nano-gizmos, to a congragation of adoring female NAS victims. He delivers a bombastic, faux-Sterlingesque, literally balls-out *sermon* on the virtues of posthumanity. It came off sort of like Fabio as the Jesus you wouldn’t want to meet in a dark alley. It *rocked*. Hilarious. So Sony cut it.

[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/v/Op40ndRaaOY]

Even though Mr Lundgren is now past 50, he’s in much better shape than some of his contemporaries. And as if he didn’t have enough talents, it turns out there’s more: he can sing, dance (well, a little bit) and play drums:

*sigh*

So there’s a little YouTube tribute to an absolute legend.

The Black Crowes to take “indefinite hiatus”

•April 24, 2010 • 1 Comment

The Black Crowes

Just read the news on Blabbermouth that after their tour in August, The Black Crowes are taking an indefinite break.

I’ve loved The Black Crowes ever since I heard Remedy in 1992. Being 14 and broke at the time and seeing as this was well before the age of internet downloads, I didn’t actually get my hands on the album until a few years later, when I found a second hand copy in the now-closed CD Library in Wellington St, Perth. I was there to buy something else and totally spun out that I’d found a copy of The Southern Harmony and Musical Companion because I hadn’t seen it anywhere for years. The CD Library dude was enthusiastic about the album too, and after raving with me about it for ages while Dave wandered around bored, looking at other stuff, he ended up not charging me for it because the CD surface was quite scratched. It plays fine though. Thanks CD Library dude.

I got to see them when they were in Perth last, but because I didn’t end up writing a review, my memories are a little hazy. Google informs me that was March 2008. The show was at Challenge Stadium and we were in the front area, but they’d put rows of plastic chairs in there for some unfathomable reason. At the beginning people tried to stand up and move forward but security tried to keep everyone back – that didn’t last long though. I do remember being quite annoyed at a large drunk man close to us who was quite obnoxious but generally, it was very groovy and chilled, and everyone just rocked out kinda sedately and it was a really awesome show. They played some songs from Warpaint, their current album at the time – I remember Goodbye Daughters of the Revolution particularly – and all the old stuff that everyone was dying to hear.

Hmm, seems I remember more about it than I thought. Google has provided me with a setlist on setlist.fm too.

There’s a new album out – Before the Frost…Until the Freeze – which I don’t have yet but will definitely pick up. This band has been around in one form or another since 1984 so I guess they’re entitled to call it a day.

So for now, I’d like to say “thanks for the beautiful music” to Chris and Rich Robinson, and all the other people that have helped these two make The Black Crowes great over the years. Cheers!

Behemoth, Poland and Catholicism

•April 22, 2010 • 4 Comments

Behemoth

Although I wasn’t brought up religious, I did go through two and a half years at a Catholic high school so I have a pretty healthy disrespect for the church. Dave, being Polish, was subjected to church and religious education pretty much the whole way through his younger years. Needless to say neither of us are fans of the church. We did make some enquiries about formal excommunication a little while ago but it’s not a simple process, especially when no one will get respond to your queries.

Behemoth is one of our favourite bands – I’d say it would be pretty close to Dave’s number one favourite, in fact (although he may disagree). Being such a fan and a countryman, he was pretty stoked to have the opportunity to interview frontman Adam ‘Nergal’ Darski for our favourite zine Metal As Fuck. Dave then followed up the interview with a news item on the legal troubles Darski is facing in his home country after ripping a bible up on stage. Dave got Metal As Fuck a pretty good scoop, after his cousin tipped him off to what was being reported in the Polish media.

I was pretty stoked to read an article today on the issue on Blabbermouth that referenced Dave’s Metal As Fuck news item. The article was about a really interesting interview conducted with Krzysztof Kowalik, a Polish theology professor called upon to testify in Darski’s trial. The introduction to that interview referenced Dave’s Metal As Fuck interview too – double infamy!

I thought that Kowalik’s comments were very intelligent, well-measured and rational, and modern Poland really needs more people that share his tolerance. Essentially he says he doesn’t agree with Nergal’s actions, but he also doesn’t agree with the actions of those trying to persecute him. Particularly insightful was his closing statement:

After being submitted to years of dictatorship and occupation, Poland is now slowly adapting itself to a free democratic society. Although the laws may seem old-fashioned to some, democracy does not come with a manual. There is also no institutional or human authority that never makes mistakes or never takes wrong decisions. In order for Poland’s democratisation to progress, this authority must accept freedom of thought and criticism, even in situations where the criticism is inappropriate and illegitimate.

While I don’t like organised religion and personally have no issue with a bible being destroyed to make a point, I can’t think of a better way to look at it than Kowalik’s. Let’s hope such calmer heads prevail to keep Darski out of prison!

On blogging

•April 21, 2010 • 1 Comment

I’ve had this little blog for over four years now. It really started as a fun alternative to my two main blogs, Zombiecoder (a now-defunct web standards/best practises web development blog) and kay lives here, my (still on-going) ColdFusion/programming/technical blog.

What I discovered is that while kay lives here is necessary as a single point of reference for what is essentially my professional career, I have far more fun writing over here and on my metal festival blog, hell bent for metal. I don’t take it at all seriously, and in fact I probably break almost every rule of good blog management by posting randomly, sporadically and inconsistently – all the things I tell my web site clients not to do. But goddamn, it’s just fun – and sorry to anyone reading this (I understand one or two people do), but I’m writing this mostly for me. I’d still do it even if no one else read it.

So aaaaanyway, the fabulous Steff of Steff Metal has just published an ebook called the Grymm and Epic Guide to Blogging. Her blog is a real riot and she does all the right things including posting consistently and almost every day. Whenever she starts recommending jewellery sites and etsy stores my PayPal account starts groaning. And she went to Wacken last year, so she’s a true metal sistah, or something like that.

The ebook is cheap as chips at US $15 and as everyone knows, PayPal is not real money anyway so I picked it up because I thought it might be fun to read. Being a web developer and former SEO specialist, I’m not expecting to learn anything too radical but Steff’s writing is always so bloody enthusiastic I figure some of it might rub off on me. She promises it won’t have ‘any corporate salesy stuff or “I know best” talk’ and the few pages I’ve flicked through so far certainly support that.

So if you’re a blogger or thinking about becoming one (no doubt it’s the fame, fortune and rabid fandom that’s attracting you, right?) then go pick up Steff’s book. It’s cute, funny and useful. What more could you want?

Pete Steele is Dead Again – but sadly it’s for good, this time

Pete Steele

In 2005 Type O Negative kinda faked Peter Steele’s death – as it turns out, he had been in jail, in rehab and in a psychiatric hospital prior to release of the Dead Again album. So when I started to see rumours on Twitter last week that he had died of heart failure, I refused to believe it was true until solid news came through.

Sadly, a few hours later it was confirmed: Peter Steele, dead at 48, from causes as yet unknown, apparently after a short illness. As outpourings of grief and sympathy swept across Twitter and the online metal networks, I couldn’t help thinking what the frontman would have thought of all the fuss. I’ve read that people who knew him said his famously dark and self-deprecating sense of humour hid a lot of insecurity. It seems sad to me that he would never see the impact he had on so many fans and so many of his fellow musicians. I wonder if he’d ever had any idea how massive his legacy is.

I was late to the Type O Negative party – Dave introduced me to them in about 2001, when we first started going out. He played me Love You To Death and it’s still one of my favourite Type O songs. “Her hips move, and I can hear what they’re saying, swaying… they say the beast inside of me is gonna get ya, get ya, get…”

[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xD5No_JRrZw&hl=en]

And then of course there was the infamous Playgirl centrefold, where Pete changed the game by only agreeing to pose if he could do so erect. He talks a bit about it in this Ink interview from 2003:

‘I said to myself, "How come these guys are flaccid? Who wants to look at this?" So I said to them, "I’d like to be hard, do you have any problem with that?"’

Now that’s metal.

Check out this segment on the Ricki Lake show in 1996, where he reveals he did it for $2000:

[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b1TIE3_G_Tk&hl=en]

And then there’s this bit on the Jerry Springer show.

Jerry; Are you happy to be here Peter?
Peter: I’m less miserable.

[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UPDD19l_xWE&hl=en]

I never got to see Type O Negative live, and that really sucks.

I love the video for Black No 1 – not only for the delicious pronunciation of words like “trick or treat”, or for Pete’s awesome stand up bass (that he slings over his shoulder like a regular guitar – man that guy was huge), but because it’s a song written about hair dye. Cos that’s serious shit:

[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vFwYJYl5GUQ&hl=en]

After his prison sentence and stint in rehab, Pete found God and got religion. He wasn’t preachy about it though, which makes it ok by me. And of course, I’m sure that Pete’s idea of God was one that was ok with him having two girlfriends:

[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KgkBWZXVLyk&hl=en]

RIP, Pete. We miss you already.

Soundgarden reunion setlist revealed

•April 19, 2010 • 1 Comment

Nudedragons

The first Soundgarden show since 2007 took place last Friday in Seattle, under the name Nudedragons. Being there would have been something, right?

Metal Hammer have posted the full set list and there are some notable omissions.

Spoonman
Gun
Searching With My Good Eye Closed
Rusty Cage
Beyond The Wheel
Flower
Ugly Truth
Fell On Black Days
Hunted Down
Nothing To Say
Loud Love
Blow Up The Outside World
Pretty Noose
Outshined
Slaves And Bulldozers

Encore:

Get On The Snake
Big Dumb Sex
Waiting For The Sun (The Doors cover)

No Black Hole Sun, possibly their biggest mainstream radio hit. But more disturbingly, no Jesus Christ Pose (my personal favourite).

Blabbermouth have audio recordings of the entire set – not sure how they managed to pull that one off, reports were that security was unbelievably tight to make sure no photos were taken. The quality is excellent, so I guess it was through official channels not sneaky ones.

The band has been confirmed to headline Lollapalooza in August. I’ve never seen them live – Dave was lucky enough to be at one of their last few shows in 2007 (and he still has the tour tshirt, although it’s more hole than shirt now). I wonder if touring further afield is on the cards? We can hope.

Mercedes Lander is one smart cookie

Mercedes Lander

I’ve always liked Kittie, but they are a band that some people love to hate. I just watched a four part video interview with drummer Mercedes Lander and she really seems to be someone with her head very firmly screwed on.

She’s one of the few musicians I’ve ever heard say that they really love the touring lifestyle (as in, all of it, not just the playing live part). In the third part of the video she talks about not being a feminist which is a point of view I’ve only stopped feeling guilty about having myself in the last couple of years (i.e. not being a feminist does not mean I’m betraying my gender). And the fact that she started playing in Kittie when she was only 12 years old and yet still enjoys what she does makes her all the more remarkable.

Ok yeah, I have a little girl crush. Check out the interview:
